Traumatic brain injury and concussion can leave lasting neurological effects that standard care doesn't fully address. MeRT® maps the specific patterns of dysregulation and targets them directly. Auto accident PIP insurance accepted.
Traumatic brain injury and concussion don't always resolve on their own. Many people experience persistent symptoms weeks, months, or even years after the initial injury — symptoms that standard neurological care attributes to "post-concussive syndrome" without offering a clear treatment path.
MeRT takes a different approach: it starts by mapping the current state of your brainwave activity to identify exactly where communication has been disrupted, then builds a treatment protocol to address those specific patterns.
After a traumatic brain injury, the brain's neural networks often develop patterns of dysregulation that don't self-correct. A qEEG brain map can identify these patterns precisely — showing where brainwave activity is abnormal, where coherence has been disrupted, and what frequency range the brain is struggling to maintain.
MeRT uses that data to deliver magnetic stimulation precisely tuned to your brain's needs — encouraging the neural networks affected by the injury to re-establish healthier communication patterns. It's not a general treatment for "brain injury." It's a protocol built around how your brain is actually functioning right now.
The rTMS equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared for depression and OCD. Use for TBI-related neurological symptoms is considered off-label, following a full evaluation — standard health insurance coverage for the treatment itself is not typical, though your auto accident PIP coverage may apply (see below).
Michigan's No-Fault auto insurance law requires insurers to pay for all reasonably necessary medical treatment resulting from a motor vehicle accident — with no dollar cap under current law for most policies. If your TBI, concussion, or cognitive symptoms resulted from a car accident, your auto insurance PIP coverage may cover MeRT treatment in full.
Brain Treatment Center Michigan handles PIP billing directly. Here's what to expect:
Your first visit includes a full consultation with our physician team. We review your injury history, current symptoms, imaging records if available, and determine whether MeRT is appropriate for your situation.
A comfortable EEG cap records your brainwave activity — no needles, no discomfort. The data shows us exactly where your brain's communication patterns have been disrupted by the injury.
Monday through Friday for approximately six weeks. Sessions are 30–45 minutes. The EEG is repeated at weeks two, four, and six so the protocol adjusts as your brain responds.
At the end of treatment, you review your before-and-after EEG data with the physician team — seeing exactly how your brainwave patterns changed over the course of treatment.
Brain Treatment Center Michigan approaches TBI recovery through a functional medicine lens — addressing the neurological impact of injury alongside the systemic factors that influence healing. Our team includes expertise in neuromusculoskeletal medicine specifically relevant to post-injury care.

Dr. Wallace oversees all clinical protocols at Brain Treatment Center Michigan. Her functional medicine background means treatment addresses root-cause neurological and systemic factors — not just symptoms.

MeRT can be beneficial in both the acute and chronic phases of TBI recovery. Many patients come to us months or years after their initial injury, still experiencing symptoms that haven't resolved. The qEEG identifies current patterns of dysregulation regardless of when the injury occurred.
Does my auto insurance cover MeRT treatment?
Michigan's No-Fault PIP law requires insurers to cover all reasonably necessary medical treatment resulting from a motor vehicle accident. If your TBI resulted from a car accident, PIP may cover your treatment. We handle the billing and documentation directly — call care team to verify your coverage before your first appointment.
Do I need imaging (MRI, CT) before starting?
Imaging is not required to begin the MeRT evaluation process, though we will review any existing scans as part of your consultation. The qEEG provides a functional picture of your brain's activity that imaging alone cannot show.
Can MeRT be used alongside other TBI rehabilitation?
Yes. MeRT can be combined with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and other rehabilitation approaches. Many patients and providers find that MeRT enhances the benefit of other therapies by addressing the underlying neurological dysregulation.
What if my TBI also caused depression or anxiety?
Depression and anxiety are among the most common complications of TBI. Our team evaluates and treats co-occurring mood disorders as part of the same process — Dr. Wood conducts a full intake evaluation with our psychiatrist at intake, and the MeRT protocol can be designed to address both the TBI-related dysregulation and the mood symptoms simultaneously.
Is TBI-related treatment considered off-label?
The rTMS equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared for depression and OCD. Use for TBI-related neurological symptoms is considered off-label, following a full evaluation. Standard health insurance coverage for the treatment itself is unlikely, though auto accident PIP claims are handled separately — see above.
