The basics

What is MeRT® treatment?

MeRT® (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a personalized approach to brain stimulation that uses your own brainwave data to guide treatment. A quantitative EEG (qEEG) measures your unique brainwave patterns, and your protocol is built around what that data shows.

How is MeRT different from standard rTMS?

Standard rTMS uses a fixed protocol that's largely the same for every patient. MeRT adds qEEG brain mapping on top of FDA-cleared rTMS equipment, so your protocol is customized to your own brain activity and adjusted as you respond.

Is the treatment invasive?

No. MeRT is non-invasive and non-surgical. It requires no anesthesia, and you remain conscious and alert throughout each session.

What does a session feel like?

A magnetic coil is positioned against your scalp and delivers brief pulses. Most patients describe the sensation as a light tapping on the scalp.

qEEG brain mapping

What is a qEEG?

A quantitative EEG measures electrical activity in your brain using sensors placed on your scalp. That data is analyzed and compared against normative data to build a picture of your brain's activity patterns.

What happens during the EEG appointment?

A cap containing sensors is placed on your head, with additional sensors on your ears and chest. The recording itself typically takes 10–15 minutes, though the full appointment may run 30 minutes to an hour.

What to expect week to week

How long does treatment take?

Sessions typically last 15–20 minutes and are usually scheduled five days a week for several weeks. Follow-up EEG evaluations happen at regular intervals so your protocol can be adjusted along the way.

What are the most common side effects?

The most commonly reported side effect is mild headache or scalp sensitivity, particularly early in treatment, which typically improves as treatment continues.

Is there a risk of seizures?

The seizure risk associated with transcranial magnetic stimulation is very low. We screen every patient for contraindications before treatment begins.

Next steps

How do you determine if I'm a good candidate?

A consultation and qEEG evaluation allow our physicians to review your symptoms, history, and brainwave data to assess whether MeRT is appropriate for you.

Can MeRT be combined with other therapies?

Yes. Many patients continue other care — psychotherapy, speech or occupational therapy, or ongoing medical care — alongside MeRT treatment.

Is MeRT a cure?

No. MeRT is not a cure. The goal is to help optimize brain function and communication between brain regions, which can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
